How Lab2Health works
Step by step — from a paper or PDF result to an entry in Apple Health.
1. Reading the result (OCR in your browser)
Once you upload a PDF or photo, Lab2Health reads the text locally using OCR technology (Tesseract.js) running in your browser. No file is ever sent to a server — the whole process happens on your device.
2. Parsing and matching to a standard
The recognized text is analyzed for test / value / unit / reference range pairs, then matched against a dictionary of tests containing LOINC codes and UCUM units — international standards used in medical documentation.
3. Your verification
Before anything is exported, you see a table of the recognized values next to a preview of the original document. You can correct any value — OCR isn't 100% certain, so your verification is a required step.
4. Building the health card (SMART Health Card)
The verified data is packaged as a FHIR resource (Observation), compressed, and saved as a .smart-health-card file compliant with the SMART Health Cards 1.4.0 standard — the same one Apple Health recognizes natively.
5. Importing into Apple Health
Open the downloaded file on your iPhone — the Health app will offer to import it into Health Records → Test Results, along with history and trend charts.
What it looks like after export
Every imported result lands in the right category in the Health app — with full history if you've uploaded results of the same test from different dates. You open one parameter and see how it's trended over time, not just a single number.

Add Lab2Health to your home screen
Lab2Health is a progressive web app (PWA) — you can add it to your iPhone's home screen and open it like a regular app, without going through Safari every time.
- 1In Safari, with lab2health.pl open, tap the Share icon (a square with an arrow pointing up) on the bottom bar.
- 2Scroll down the list and choose “Add to Home Screen”.
- 3Confirm the name and tap “Add” in the top-right corner.
Important disclaimer
Lab2Health is not a medical device. It doesn't interpret results or make diagnoses — it only transcribes data from one format into another. Always verify the values before exporting and discuss your results with a doctor.
